FloEFD: CFD for Designers Who Don’t Want to Learn CFD
The CFD bottleneck in product development
Most product-development organisations have a CFD bottleneck. The design team creates a concept, hands it to the simulation team, waits for analysis results, gets feedback, redesigns, and sends it back. Each round trip takes days or weeks. By the time the thermal or flow issue is identified, the design is already locked in and changing it is expensive.
The root cause isn’t a lack of CFD capability — it’s that traditional CFD tools are built for specialists. They require geometry export, manual meshing, solver setup, convergence monitoring and post-processing expertise that most mechanical designers don’t have and shouldn’t need to learn.
Simcenter FloEFD solves this by embedding CFD directly inside the CAD tool — NX, Solid Edge, PTC Creo or Dassault CATIA V5. The designer runs thermal and flow analysis without leaving the CAD environment, without exporting geometry, and without learning a separate simulation tool.
What “CAD-embedded” actually means
FloEFD is not a standalone CFD solver with a CAD import function. It is a fully embedded add-in that lives inside the CAD application:
- No geometry export. The CFD model uses the live CAD geometry. Change a wall thickness or vent position in NX, and the CFD model updates automatically.
- No manual meshing. FloEFD’s SmartCells technology generates the mesh automatically using an immersed-boundary Cartesian approach. It handles “dirty” geometry (gaps, overlaps, small features) without the engineer needing to defeature or repair the model.
- Wizard-based setup. Boundary conditions, materials and physics options are set through a guided workflow, not a solver-input-file editor.
- Results in context. Temperature fields, pressure drops and flow paths are displayed on the CAD model in the CAD environment — not in a separate post-processor.
The result is that a mechanical designer with no CFD training can set up and run a thermal or flow analysis in the same time it takes to set up a rendering.
Where FloEFD pays off
FloEFD’s value is not in replacing specialist CFD tools — it’s in frontloading simulation so that design decisions are informed by thermal and flow data from the start.
Electronics cooling: A PCB layout engineer checks junction temperatures of power components before committing to an enclosure design. The first FloEFD run shows a hot spot above a voltage regulator. The engineer adds a thermal pad, repositions a vent, re-runs in the same session, and confirms the fix. No simulation team involvement, no round-trip delay.
LED and lighting thermal management: LED luminaire designers need to verify that junction temperatures stay within the LED manufacturer’s rating under real operating conditions. FloEFD lets them run steady-state and transient thermal analysis on the full luminaire assembly — heatsink, driver, optics and housing — directly in the CAD model.
Heat exchangers and manifolds: Pressure-drop and heat-transfer predictions on internal-flow geometries (oil coolers, water jackets, HVAC ducts) without meshing complex internal passages manually.
Mould cooling: Injection-mould designers evaluate cooling-channel layouts and cycle times before cutting steel. FloEFD predicts temperature distribution across the mould and part, identifying hot spots that would cause warpage or extended cycle times.
Valve and pump housings: Quick flow-path and pressure-drop checks on housing designs to identify recirculation zones or cavitation risk early in the design phase.
FloEFD vs STAR-CCM+: when to use which
Both are Siemens Simcenter CFD products, but they serve different users and different problems:
| FloEFD | STAR-CCM+ | |
|---|---|---|
| User | Design/mechanical engineer | CFD specialist/analyst |
| Workflow | Inside CAD (NX, Solid Edge, Creo, CATIA) | Standalone |
| Meshing | Automatic, no user intervention | Polyhedral, surface wrapper, user-controlled |
| Physics depth | Flow, heat transfer, radiation, solar loading | Full multiphysics (+ multiphase, DEM, combustion, FSI, acoustics) |
| Typical problems | Electronics cooling, heat exchangers, HVAC, valve pressure drop | Vehicle aerodynamics, battery thermal, turbomachinery, reacting flow |
| Turnaround | Minutes to hours | Hours to days |
| Accuracy | Validated against 110+ benchmarks | Industry-reference accuracy for general CFD |
The guideline: if the problem is thermal or flow in a well-defined geometry and the engineer who owns the design should be running the simulation, use FloEFD. If the problem involves multiphase, combustion, complex turbulence, or requires a specialist to set up, use STAR-CCM+.
Many DDSPLM customers deploy both — FloEFD for frontloading by the design team, STAR-CCM+ for detailed validation by the simulation team. The two tools are complementary, not competing.
The productivity numbers
Siemens benchmark data (validated against customer deployments) shows:
- Up to 75% faster simulation turnaround compared to traditional CFD workflows on the same problem.
- 2x–40x productivity gains from frontloading — because catching a thermal problem in concept saves the cost of a late redesign and a physical prototype.
- First-run convergence — FloEFD’s automated meshing and solver settings mean most runs converge without manual tweaking.
These are not marketing claims about the solver speed — they reflect the total workflow time: geometry prep + meshing + solving + post-processing + communication back to design.
How DDSPLM supports FloEFD
- Licensing — FloEFD is available as a standalone licence or through Simcenter Value Tokens. We help size the deployment for your team.
- Training — application-specific training (electronics cooling, heat exchanger, mould cooling) rather than generic tool training.
- Integration — deploying FloEFD alongside NX, Solid Edge and Teamcenter in your existing workflow.
- Engineering services — for organisations that want to validate the approach before deploying internally, our CFD services team can run a proof-of-concept project on your geometry.
